The Town Hall of Leuven

Posted 1 year ago by skip in response to avatar bekky's question: I ran into many people praising the Town Hall in Leuven. What makes it so special? (give a different answer) .

It's the carvings representing biblical scenes and the 236 statues that decorate the niches. These religious carvings, based especially on the motif "sin-punishment", were aimed at the judges that inhabited the building, having didactic and admonishing function. As far as the statues are concerned, the ones on the groundfloor show artists, scholars and eminent citizens of Leuven, the first floor is decorated with symbols of municipal favours and the patron saints of the parishes...while the second floor has statues of the dukes and counts of Leuven. Go for a visit, it's in the Great Market Square!
